Scarp
Scarp is a series of images of the South Downs escarpment between Fulking and Tottington in West Sussex. The Fulking escarpment is an icon of the South Downs, popularly viewed from the Devil’s Dyke Hotel looking west towards Chanctonbury. It is a visually complex area and one I have always found fascinating and inspiring.
The character of the landscape is a function of both geology and human influence as well as the transient effect of light and weather conditions depending on time of day or season.
These attributes are the subject of the series creating a narrative of a familiar landscape which, although relatively small in area, is both scenically grand and intricate in detail.
